Josephine was born in Edison, New Jersey at the JFK Hospital. She is the oldest of three – a younger brother and a younger sister. She often had the responsibility of baby sitting her younger siblings and running errands for mom on her bicycle (Josephine loved riding her bicycle everywhere so her mother bought her a basket to put on the front of her bicycle to put groceries in) – but she never regretted it – it was just another excuse to go “bike riding”.
She spent most of her childhood years living in Lakehurst, New Jersey, just outside the Naval Air Base. The most exciting childhood memory for her was watching the Blue Angels practicing right outside her house – she would lay on the lawn in her front yard and watch the jets as they roared by at what seemed like lightening speed. (The Blue Angels is the U.S. Navy’s flight demonstration squadron, with aviators from the Navy and Marines). She is still a big fan!
Josephine’s father was from Carini, Sicily but unfortunately, Josephine never learned the language. Her father was proud to become an American and learn the English language. Sometimes Josephine would help him with his speaking and writing English. She had the privilege of visiting Sicily to meet her father’s side of the family and created very fond memories. She keeps in touch with most of them today. Her mother was from Hazleton PA, where Josephine moved when entering her High School years (not an easy move since Josephine is the “quiet type”).
After High School, Josephine completed a 1 year program to become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and went on to work for a Hospice Agency for several years. Then she went to college and obtained her Bachelor Degree in Arts with a major in Social Welfare.
For 6 years, Josephine sponsored a child from Haiti. The sponsorship allowed her sponsor child, Erma, to attend school, receive a hot meal, medical care, school books and uniforms and the opportunity to hear the Gospel message. In 2001, Josephine was able to go to Haiti on a missionary trip and meet her sponsor child in person.
Today, Josephine still enjoys bike riding but a different kind of bike – a motorcycle. She is married to John who also enjoys motorcycle riding. They will be celebrating their 10 year marriage anniversary in September. They have an Old English Sheepdog named Hannah Bear who is a Therapy Dog. Josephine and John enjoy taking Hannah Bear to personal care homes and nursing homes on weekends to visit the sick, elderly and confined. [Read more about Josephine’s therapy dog here]. They are also very active in their church and enjoy church events. Josephine also enjoys fairs, movies, good books and the outdoors.
