Four out of every ten people reaching age 65 will spend some time in a nursing home, and many more will require home care and assistance with daily living. The need for long term care may arise as a result of mental disorders (e.g. Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia), vascular problems (e.g. stroke), heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems (e.g. COPD), falls, or a combination of these causes.
